Baby shoes use almost no yarn, but they can be fussier than a blanket. The sole has to stay flat, the walls have to stand up, and the whole thing has to fit a foot smaller than your palm. Most patterns I tried either curled at the toe or came out looking like tiny boats.
So I worked out my own version. The sole is a simple oval, and one round worked in the back loops gives the walls a clean edge. The cream toe is built from front post stitches, so it looks ribbed without any embroidery. A puff stitch flower sits on top, and the ties end in little stuffed balls.
It’s also a great project for leftover cotton. You need less than 50 yards of yarn in total, so you can finish a pair in one sitting. Need a bigger size? The notes at the bottom cover that.

Finished Size
- Sole length: approximately 3.5 in / 9 cm (0-3 months)
- Wall height: approximately 1 in / 2.5 cm
- Tie length: approximately 10 in / 25 cm each
- For 3-6 months, use the larger-size numbers shown in brackets [ ].
Skill Level
Confident Beginner. You should be comfortable with magic ring, single crochet, increases, and decreases. The only slightly new stitches are front post double crochet and puff stitch, and both are explained below.
Materials
- Yarn (Light Cotton, DK or Sport Weight):
- Color A (Mint Green): ~30 yd / 27 m, for the sole, walls, flower, ties, and balls
- Color B (Cream): ~20 yd / 18 m, for the toe edge and flower center
- Hook: 2.5 mm
- Notions: Yarn needle • Stitch marker • Small amount of fiberfill
A quick word on yarn: I’d stick with mercerized cotton. It keeps the stitches crisp and the walls firm. Acrylic works if it’s all you have, but it stretches, so drop down a hook size. Fluffy yarns make the little ribbed stitches disappear, so I’d avoid them.

Gauge
In single crochet, worked in continuous rounds: 6 sts = 1 in / 2.5 cm. Don’t worry about matching it perfectly, but do check your sole. It should measure about 3.5 in / 9 cm once Round 3 is done. If it’s bigger, go down a hook size. If it’s smaller, go up.
Abbreviations
- ch: chain
- sc: single crochet
- inc: increase (2 sc in same stitch)
- dec: decrease (sc2tog)
- sl st: slip stitch
- fpdc: front post double crochet
- MR: magic ring
- BLO: back loop only
- FO: fasten off
All rounds are worked continuously (no joining) unless noted. Put a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round and move it up as you go.
Pattern Instructions
Sole
With Color A, ch 11.
- Rnd 1: 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 8 [10] chs, 3 sc in last ch. Turn and sc in the 8 [10] loops on the other side of the chain. (22) [26]
- Rnd 2: inc in each of next 3 sts, sc 8, inc in each of next 3 sts, sc 8. (28) [32]
- Rnd 3: (sc 1, inc) x3, sc 8, (sc 1, inc) x3, sc 8. (34) [38]
- Rnd 4: sc in BLO around. (34) [38]
- Round 4 is what makes the walls stand up straight. If you skip it, the sides flare out.
Marking the Toe (Corrected Vibe):
The end where you started Round 1 is the toe. To ensure the cream ribbing centers perfectly over the front curve, fold the sole flat along the center chain. Place a marker at the exact middle stitch at the toe end. Count 6 [7] stitches backward and 6 [7] stitches forward from that middle stitch. This creates your 13 [15]-stitch toe section for the ribbed detail.
Walls
- Rnds 5-7: sc around in Color A. (34) [38]
- Stop and hold it against a baby’s foot. If the walls lean outward, your tension is loose, so use a smaller hook for the rest of the shoe. If they pull inward, go up half a size.
Ribbed Cream Edge
- Rnd 8: Join Color B. Sc in each stitch until you reach your first toe marker. Across the 13 [15] toe stitches, work: (fpdc around the post of the next st in Rnd 7, sc in next st) repeat until 1 stitch remains in the section, fpdc in that last marked toe stitch. Sc in each remaining st to the end of the round. (34) [38]
- Rnd 9: sc around in Color B. Sl st to join and FO. (34) [38]
- Pull each fpdc up so it stands tall against the fabric. If they look limp, you’re working them too loosely.

Puff Flower (make 1)
With Color A, make a MR.
- Petals: *ch 1, puff stitch in the ring [(yarn over, insert hook, pull up a loop) x4, yarn over and pull through all 9 loops], ch 1, sl st in ring. Repeat from * 4 more times (5 petals total). Pull the ring tight and FO, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Center bead (Color B):
- Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6)
- Rnd 2: inc around (12)
- Rnd 3: sc around (12)
- Rnd 4: dec around (6)
- Stuff lightly, close, and sew into the middle of the flower.
Puff stitch tip: pull each loop up to the same height. Uneven loops give you lumpy petals. If you’ve never made puffs before, practice on a spare ring first.
Ties (make 2)
With Color A, ch 50. Sl st back along the chain, working into the back bump of each chain. This turns it into a firm cord instead of a floppy chain. FO, leaving a 4 in tail.
Cord End Balls (make 4)
With Color A:
- Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6)
- Rnd 2: inc around (12)
- Rnd 3: sc around (12)
- Rnd 4: dec around (6)
- Stuff lightly, close, and sew one to each end of each cord.
Assembly & Safety
Assembly
- Flower: Goes on the toe, centered over the ribbed section. Pass the tail through to the inside so the knot doesn’t rub against a baby’s foot.
- Cord: Thread through the top edge (Rnd 9), starting near the heel on the outer side. Bring it across the instep and out the other side.
- Bow: Tie the two ends together.
- Heel: Tack the cord in place with 2-3 small stitches so it can’t slide out.
- Make the second shoe the same way, with the toe on the same end.

Troubleshooting
- The sole is cupping: Add one more sc between the increases in Round 3, or steam it flat, holding the iron slightly above the fabric.
- It’s too tight: Use a larger hook for Rounds 5-9 only. The sole stays the same and the walls get a little more give.
- The toe sticks up: Skip Round 7 and go straight to the cream round.
- The ribbing looks messy: Check that each fpdc goes around the post directly below, not the one beside it.
A Few Ways to Switch It Up
- Size adjustments: Add or remove 2 chains at the start. Each chain changes the sole length by about 0.2 in.
- Color palettes: Blush pink with cream, lemon yellow, or lavender all look lovely.
- Gift sets: Make a matching headband using the same puff flower pattern.
- Bag charm: Make just one shoe, skip the ties, and sew a keyring loop to the heel.
A note on safety: These are decorative shoes for short, supervised wear. Sew every flower, bead, and ball on firmly and give each one a good tug. For very young babies, you can skip the end balls entirely and just knot the cord ends.
If you make a pair, please send me a photo! Everyone’s version turns out a little different, and I love seeing them. Drop it in the comments, or tag me if you post it. Happy hooking!
